Research reviews describe the pineal gland as a neuroendocrine organ whose principal output is melatonin, produced with a strong day-night rhythm. In mammals, light information reaches the pineal indirectly through neural pathways rather than the gland acting as a direct light sensor.
Pineal gland and melatonin
Melatonin is released predominantly during the biological night and acts as a timing signal. It is often called a “sleep hormone,” but that shorthand is incomplete: melatonin is also a signal of darkness and circadian phase.
